St. Patty's Day 2004

Two years ago today, about a dozen former Disney artists and animators gathered around a computer monitor in a small office to view the story reel of an animated short film called “Lucky.”

The film was to be the first project of a fledgling studio that formed after the closing of Walt Disney Feature Animation, Florida. Our goal was to create quality animated films with compelling stories and strong characters and to continue Walt Disney’s legacy of hand drawn animation and, hopefully, in the process, save the Orlando animation community.

My memory is that the response to the screening was favorable, though not overwhelmingly so. There were notes—good notes—and a lot of work ahead. Our production schedule would be short and intense, but people were excited to get to work again.
Soon after the screening, Legacy’s investor pulled the plug on the production as well as the studio. After a few short months our doors had closed.

Lucky was shelved and has remained there until now.
